Another successful PhD defence of the FlexH2 project!
In June, Dr Reza Mirzadarani successfully defended his doctoral thesis, which was approved by the doctoral committee. His work focuses on the design aspects of High-Power Medium Frequency Transformers (MTF’s, a key enabler technology for compact and material saving solid state transformers. These innovations are critical for applications such as green hydrogen production and data centre grid power processing.
Dr. Mirzadarani’s work explored several converter topologies, including MMC, MMR and ISOP, and ultimately identifying the MMR topology as the most promising for high-power applications. To demonstrate significant reductions in volume and weight, advanced design and engineering studies were conducted using a 3D thermo-electric platform (COMSOL). A prototype was successfully developed and passed all the defined high voltage tests, showing greatly improved partial discharge performance thanks to the novel semi-conductive coating.
We warmly congratulate Dr. Reza Mirzadarani and wish him great success in his new role at Royal Smit Transformers. We also sincerely thank him for his valuable contributions to the FlexH2 consortium.
